As a student athlete at Lee Academy, Fernald (class of 1951) excelled at basketball and baseball, as well as serving as his class’s president for four years and graduating near the top of his class. His desire to make a difference in young peoples’ lives was evident in his coaching activities. Fernald was a Pee Wee basketball and Little League organizer and coach for over 25 years. He served as Lee Academy’s baseball coach from 1977-1986, leading the team to many playoff berths. He devoted countless hours organizing the effort to expand and improve the baseball field. Subsequently, the field was dedicated in his honor as Linscott Field in 1987.

Fernald was inducted into the Lee Academy Athletic Hall of Fame in October of 2011.
